Cursor vs GitHub Copilot vs Claude Code

Three different shapes of AI coding: an AI-first editor (Cursor), an assistant that plugs into your existing IDE (Copilot), and a terminal agent that makes large multi-file changes (Claude Code). Short answer: Cursor for an all-in-one AI editor, Copilot for the best value and team rollout, Claude Code for the heaviest refactors and feature work.

Cursor

Cursor · 86.5/100

Cursor remains the reference AI code editor: a VS Code fork with excellent tab completion, multi-file agent edits and background agents. It's the tool most vibe coders graduate to once app builders hit limits. Its pricing has shifted several times, most recently to a Plus/Premium/Super/Ultra lineup in October 2026 where Plus covers Grok models only and third-party models are billed at API list price on top, so check the live page. Still the default pick for serious builders.

Pros: Top-tier agent and tab completion; VS Code familiarity; Huge community and pace. Cons: Pricing changed repeatedly; confusing; Third-party model usage billed separately.

GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot · 81.5/100

GitHub Copilot is the most widely used AI coding assistant, working inside VS Code, JetBrains and more, with chat, agent mode and a cloud coding agent that opens pull requests. At $10 a month, Pro is the best-value paid plan here, and the free tier is genuinely usable. It's less suited to non-developers building from scratch, and top models require Pro+ or Max. The safe choice for teams.

Pros: Cheapest strong paid plan; Works in many IDEs; Deep GitHub integration and coding agent. Cons: Premium models gated to higher tiers; Less 'app from prompt' than others.

Claude Code

Claude Code · 86.0/100

Claude Code is Anthropic's agentic coding tool that runs in your terminal, IDE or browser, reading your codebase and making coordinated multi-file changes. It's widely regarded as one of the strongest agents for real-world refactors and feature work, and is very extensible through MCP and hooks. There's no free tier, and heavy users typically need a Max plan. A favorite for developers who are comfortable with the command line.

Pros: Top-tier code quality on complex tasks; Works in terminal, IDE, web; Highly extensible (hooks, MCP, subagents). Cons: No free tier; Usage limits on Pro feel tight.
